IEN researchers innovation ecosystems of different countries and regions. In your opinion, why on many of the maps that you produce there is very little activity visible in Russia?
For mapping international innovation ecosystems, we primarily utilize data in English (news, press releases, social media); since we believe it reflects very current information about the international ambitions of companies involved in innovation. Currently internationally-oriented data on innovation is sparse for Russia. To better understand internally-focused national and regional innovation ecosystems, we are working on collecting and processing the data in the local languages (including Russian). As internal innovation initiatives seek participation in the global economy their communications are increasingly in English.
What should Russia concentrate on in order to be more innovative.
We believe that the innovation ecosystem depends on relationships as conduits for financial and information resources. Networks of relationships foster innovation by connecting researchers/innovators with each other and with business people for investment, employment and growth. The network enables the flow of ideas, resources, and finances among all of the entities in an ecosystem; and more importantly realization that coordinated actions are important to succeed. The availability of data and analysis frameworks that allow connections to the right people for the development of the network is crucial for activating investment capital and accelerating entrepreneurial growth.
